Skincare Routine for Naturally Radiant Skin

Updated: Jul 22, 2020

Skin Health is a reflection of overall wellness both inside and out.

If you've always wished you had naturally beautiful and radiant skin, but didn't feel it was possible, think again. A healthy integumentary system (your skin, hair, glands and nails) begins with an overall balanced approach to life and how we experience it. Starting with what you put on your skin, and consume internally, and raging all the way to what you think, how you process stressful situations, and how you nourish your body. As we focus on maintaining balanced and healthy habits during our weekly routine, we build a healthy foundation within, as well as without. Doing simple things like reducing stress, going to a yoga class, or meditation are wonderful and simple additions that have a lasting impact not only psychologically, but physiologically as well. Your skin is your first immune defense and acts as a protective barrier (when intact and healthy, that is) between you and harmful pathogens and toxins that exist in the environment. Because your skin is the first line of contact with the outside world and is exposed to a wide array of harmful free-radicals, or toxins it's important to ensure it is whole and healthy and that we are nourishing it with clean, and safe ingredients in our favorite products.

Detox & Restore Vitality to your Skin.

Cleansing the cells from the inside out is a great start to nourishing healthy, rejuvenated skin. But just how can you do that? There are many ways to stimulate natural detoxing such as staying hydrated, eating plenty of phytonutrients (not just leafy greens, but all the colors of the rainbow). Most importantly, however, is removing all unnatural skin and beauty care products that could be causing more harm than not and begin to replace them with pure, naturally organic plant based products that nurture your body's nature. You may also want to think about adding in a detox regimen to your daily routine, so that you can begin removing all of those years of pesky toxin build up that can accumulate within your cells as toxic waste.

You can find my favorite most pure and natural, plant-based cleanse which naturally activates the body's innate detox pathways here, just search: Detox & Restore Kit in the search bar by selecting the 'Shop' tab. All of us who are breathing and living, have an innate detox system in the body that initiates a detox response, a cascade of enzymes which stimulate natural detox processes in the body. The ARE (antioxidant response element) is a Master Detox Pathway or system of pathways in the body that is activated through the use of phytonutrients deprived from naturally sourced plants. This master detox pathway, specifically the NRF2 transcription factors orchestrate major cellular defense mechanisms includes phase-II detoxification, inflammatory signaling, DNA repair, and antioxidant response in the body to eliminate harmful toxins, and free radicals. Recent studies strongly suggest a protective role of NRF2-mediated gene expression in the suppression of photodamage of the skin cutaneous layer induced by solar UV (ultraviolet) radiation. Below I have complied a few basic lifestyle tips to begin implementing if you are seeking to nourish a healthier, more vibrant glow from the inside out.

1. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is a simple way to ensure your skin stays clean, and clear of toxic waste. The circulatory system supplies oxygen and nutrients to our bodies by working with the respiratory system, and plays a role in the natural detox processes of the body helping to carry waste and carbon dioxide out of the cells causing you skin to look naturally more radiant. Drinking water helps to flush out toxins from the inside out, and is healthy for the whole body stimulating the flow of blood and balancing the cardiovascular system. Water aids in not only digestion, but circulation and absorption of nutrients as well, a major factor in immune and skin health. Without water your skin gets dull, dry and wrinkles and pores are more likely to appear weakening your natural immune protective layer.

2. Eat a Clean, Nutritious Array of Foods

It is no secret that eating processed, fast-foods causes toxic build up and leads to break outs, causing damage to your skin, and health. Here is a list of foods which are clean, nourishing and help you keep a more balanced skin complexion. Break-outs can leave scars on your skin that take away from your natural beauty, so it is important we look at ways we can prevent it from happening in the first place. Your skin is mostly made up of phospholipids, or fats, which create an outer protective layer. Eating foods that are high in unprocessed fats, and minimizing the consumption of carbs and processed foods will nourish a healthy balance and beautiful, even complexion.

Include more of the following foods in your diet:

  1. Make sure to eat your fruits and vegetable! Eating from the Rainbow Diet is a great way to make sure that we are getting all of the nutrients that we need for a healthy body overall. While foods such as tomatoes, broccoli, red or green bell peppers are recommended for skin health, approaching the skin as a wholistic organ that works In conjunction with the rest of the body reminds us that we should take care of consuming all of the different nutrients offered In the variety of colors of the natural spectrum of light derived foods.

  2. Fatty fish such as salmon (high in EPA/DHA the active ingredients in omega) mackerel, and herring, are excellent.

  3. Avocados are a great source of vit C, E, K, and B-6, as well as fiber, riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium. What more should I say about this amazing super food?! They also provide lutein, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids for the win! Although most of the calories in an avocadocome from fat, allow yourself to indulge!

  4. Walnuts are a great source of manganese, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin B6, iron and also a great source of healthy fats for the skin.

  5. Sweet potatoes according to the book 'Healing Foods' by DK Publishing House has high levels of beta-carotene meaning sweet potatoes benefit the skin by fighting the free-radicals (toxins) that cause skin damage and aging. "Sweet potatoes are also rich in vitamin C and Vitamin E, both of which are very crucial to keep your skin healthy, glowing and supple so as to not wrinkle over time.

3. Dry Brush with Yarrow|Pom Active Nutraceutical Duo.

Dry brushing helps to stimulate the lymphatic system, and start moving toxins out from the inside of the cells. This is why when you have a cold your lymph nodes often become swollen due to toxin build up. Dry Brushing ought to help the body release toxins through sweat. The course bristles on the brush stimulate the pores and open them up. Beginning from the legs I move gently upwards as I begin to brush, moving all the way up through the body and to the neck face and arms, finishing at the heart where the lymphatic system drains to and cleanses itself flushing toxins out of the body through the elimination organs. Remember your body’s skin and face are one large organism as a whole (I never understood why companies made creams for the body and for the face separately). Before I dry brush when I get out of the shower I use a few squirts of Yarrow|Pom Whole Body Serum and dry brush away!

Yarrow|Pom is a one-of-a-kind proprietary blend of yarrow essential oil and cold-pressed pomegranate seed oil which offers a variety of powerful benefits by up-regulating enzymes that regulate collagen production and regenerating softer skin tissue. Yarrow essential oil has a high chamazulene content and is a great source of beta-carophyllene. It is similar to some of the blue oils; however, unlike Blue Tansy which should only be used aromatically and topically, yarrow is recognized by the FDA as a food additive (meaning it is safe for ingestion). Many yarrow products on the market contain thujone, which is a chemical that is toxic to the nervous system and should never be ingested. Be aware of safe practices and ethical sourcing when you look to purchase products from a new company. Our doTERRA Yarrow oil has been tested through the CPTG® process to ensure it does not contain thujone in any trace amounts, ever.

4. DIY Face Mask with Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Essential oils support clean, healthy-looking skin while also reducing the appearance of blemishes. Essential Oils such as Turmeric oil is a great option for skin care as well as Frankincense and Jasmine to name a few. When incorporated into your regular skin care routine, Turmeric Essential Oil for example, can help to promote clear, smooth, and radiant-looking skin. Try this DIY Turmeric face mask when your skin is feeling lackluster or dull to revive it naturally. With natural ingredients and a little help from essential oils this DIY will give your skin the clear radiance you crave. Did I already mention how simple it is to make?

Ingredients

2 tablespoons of bentonite clay

5-7 drops Turmeric, Frankincense and Lavender Essential Oils.

3 table spoons yogurt (optional, I personally love to use good ol' water)

A few drops of honey

Instructions

  1. Mix the bentonite clay, Turmeric, Frankincense or Lavender (you may use all 3 or one of your choice), yogurt (optional), and honey together to create a paste.

  2. Apply a thin layer of the clay paste to your face and let it dry for 20-30 minutes. Rinse your face, scrubbing gently to remove the paste.

  3. Finish by applying your favorite moisturizer to your face. My favorite as I mentioned above is the Yarrow|Pom Active Nutraceutical Duo. Some people ask, “Is Turmeric oil good for the skin?” Because it supports clean, healthy-looking skin –while also reducing the appearance of blemishes—Turmeric oil is a great option for skin care. When incorporated into your regular skin care routine, Turmeric essential oil can help to promote clear, smooth, and radiant-looking skin. It's also amazing to nourish curls naturally and hydrate your locks for a healthy looking head of hair.
